The Four Modalities

This page discusses four common techniques Mary Blake uses in her sessions with clients: Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy®, Hypnotherapy, and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®.

There has been a great deal of solid research on these modalities – follow Mary’s blog where she discusses past studies and case studies, and send her your questions or post them to Mary’s Facebook page for a group discussion.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

NLP has been successfully used by psychologists, therapists and thought leaders since the 1970s. The practice is based on the scientific premise that our words (language) and our mind (neurology) affects our body, behaviour and how we act out in the world (programming).

By using NLP techniques, you can change your behaviour, feel different about yourself, and overcome fear and stress.

‘This modality works especially well with clients who know what they want, but can’t make themselves take the necessary actions. If you want to stop smoking or lose weight, then you should try this! I even offer a guarantee – ask me about it!’ – Mary Blake

Time Line Therapy®

Time Line Therapy® has generated a great deal of interest and take-up amongst the professional community since making its debut in the 1980s.

It’s based on the premise that your history – particularly your feelings about past events and relationships – affects your current emotions. The therapy takes clients back to a particular event to remove emotions that may still be affecting them, therefore influencing their current thoughts and actions.

If you’ve had a negative experience, you may have rationalised it in your head, but the emotions could still be affecting you subconsciously. Holding onto unwanted emotions and pain takes up energy and detracts from putting your full attention on things that are important to you and even stop you achieving your true potential.

‘The applications of this modality are far and wide.

‘I have worked with an operations manager for a large company to help him complete an important task on time. He completed it confidently and submitted it early. He told me it was the first time he’d achieved this, often procrastinating, missing deadlines and putting in a half-hearted effort because in the past he had never been successful – so why even try?

‘Another client experienced a seriously traumatic event. By working through her timeline and limiting decisions, she’s been able to break through the negative emotions she’s been holding onto and experience a positive outlook, increased energy and motivation for the first time since the trauma. While she is still a work in progress, she’s managed to turn a big corner.’ – Mary Blake

Time Line Therapy®

Hypnosis is our mind in a state of relaxation and focus. It’s a natural state in which we each go in and out throughout the day as we work, shower, watch TV and even drive.

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic element associated with hypnosis. It’s based on the fact that while under a state of hypnosis our minds are most open to suggestion and response. In hypnotherapy, a trained practitioner guides you into a natural state of hypnosis, and employs techniques, such as NLP, to re-program your mind. With a professional and trained hypnotherapist, you will always remain in control of your choices and behaviour while under hypnosis.

‘One of my clients, a financial planner, likes to use hypnosis to keep him focused and motivated. I work with him on an executive level, coaching him through his issues, concerns and goals, and he finds that the occasional hypnosis session helps him stay on track.’ – Mary Blake

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, is one of the most widely used psychometric tools. Developed over a long period of time and first published in the 1960s, the instrument helps you gain a deep awareness about how you communicate, learn, work and interact with others.

It’s based on the premise that we each have preferences, or tendencies, and by gaining awareness of where we best fit, we can use our strengths and develop our weaknesses. It also helps us work well with others by gaining insight into their preferences and tendencies.

Once you have an understanding of what your personality type is, Mary can show you how to use and apply this knowledge to your advantage. It can be used to successfully develop teams and leadership skills, bring about organisational and personal change, conflict resolution, and career exploration.

‘Myers-Briggs is fantastic for teams struggling with cohesion and performance. I’ve used this to help sales teams increase their sales by 25% in as little as 4 weeks. The team members have a better understanding and appreciation of each other, and are now working together (they are no longer fighting) and subsequently the owner is reaping the rewards of a positive environment and increased revenue.’ – Mary Blake
